Paying your Council Tax

We will automatically set your payments over 10 months unless you tell us otherwise. If you would like to pay your Council Tax over 12 months, you will need to send a written request to the Council Tax team either by post or by email at

Your right to pay by monthly instalments may be lost if any instalments are not received by or on the date shown on your bill. We may then ask for the year's balance to be paid in full.

Set up a Direct Debit

Setting up a Direct Debit payment is the safest and most convenient way to pay your Council Tax. Payments can be set up on the 1st or 15th of each month.

You also can update bank details of an existing Direct Debit.

Remember, you will need your Council Tax account number to hand for any of these payment methods so we can allocate your payment correctly.

Payment through your bank, by internet, telephone banking or standing order:

Barclays Bank

  • Account name: Hart District Council
  • Account:  40021156
  • Sort code: 20-17-07
  • Reference: quote your council tax reference number (6********).

Failure to quote your account reference could lead to delays in allocating your payment and recovery notices being issued.

What if I can't or don't pay?

If you don’t pay your Council Tax by the dates shown on your bill you will receive a reminder. If you still do not pay, you risk having a court summons and additional charges being added on top of the outstanding amount.

If you begin to struggle with the payments, please contact us immediately. We can offer options that could help your circumstances, such as:

  • spreading your payments over 12 months instead of 10
  • adding a discount or exemption on to your Council Tax account
  • if you have a low income or receive a benefit, you may be entitled to Council Tax Support
  • making a payment arrangement - call the below number to arrange
  • ringing the Council Tax team to discuss your situation on 01252 622122

Remember: If you apply for a discount after receiving a bill, you will still have to make payments until we make a decision.
