Food safety for businesses

Prepacked food for direct sale

This is food packaged in advance at the same place it is offered or sold to customers. This may include sandwiches, salads and pies.

Under the regulations, known as Natasha’s Law, you must provide full ingredient lists and allergen labelling on foods prepacked for direct sale on your food premises.

The Food Standards Agency has an online tool to help check if your food is prepacked food for direct sale. There is also detailed guidance on labelling requirements.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute offers a food allergen awareness resource in multiple languages. Staff in food businesses should use it to understand labelling requirements and changes to the law.
