Domestic abuse is controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour. It includes sexual violence.
It is usually committed by a partner or ex-partner but can also be committed by a family member. It can happen to both men and women. Children are often affected.
There are many forms of domestic abuse. The person who inflicts it is trying to make a person feel frightened, isolated, exploited, and dependent.
