The overall aim of the Empty Homes Approach is to bring long-term empty homes back into use. It provides a framework for tackling the various issues associated with long-term empty homes in the private sector, in a cost-effective manner and outlines the Council’s commitment to reducing the number of empty homes in the district and bringing them back into use. It also aligns with other council strategies, such as the Housing Strategy and Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy, as well as the Local Plan aimed at increasing available dwellings.
The Empty Homes Approach sets the foundations for a well-refined empty homes service that balances support and advice with a range of enforcement options. The aim of the approach continues to focus on partnership working, using the tools available effectively and appropriately.
Regular reviews of this approach will ensure it stays up to date. By revitalising empty properties, we not only address housing needs but also mitigate issues associated with vacant homes. Empty properties can negatively impact the community, attract anti-social behaviour, and strain public services.
Our proactive approach involves supporting property owners to either bring their empty homes back into use, redevelop them or sell them on. This coordinated and sustainable effort contributes to increased housing supply, improved standards, and a reduction in empty homes.
