Transport and car parks

The Council got its first two electric vans in summer 2023 to replace older petrol vehicles

Going electric

The Council plans to install electric vehicle chargers at Hart-owned car parks. The first were set up in the car park at the Civic Centre in Fleet so the new Council vans can be charged onsite. More charge points are planned in Hartley Wintney, Fleet, Blackwater, Hook and Odiham. Installation will be rolled out during 2024.

Two vehicles in the Council's fleet have been replaced with electric vehicles. Meanwhile, rubbish and recycling bin collections are set to get ‘greener’. Waste and recycling collection trucks for Hart and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council will be powered by hydrogenated vegetable oil as a low-carbon biofuel. With emissions up to 98% lower than diesel, using conversion figures provided by Government, the biofuel will make significant cuts to both councils’ carbon footprints.

Light work

We haves upgraded the lighting in some of our car parks to energy-efficient LED lighting.

This should reduce energy use by about 50-60% and be cheaper to maintain. The new LEDs should last 20+ years, compared to the three to four years for the old high-pressure sodium lights.

The car parks with new LED lighting are:

  • Station Approach, Blackwater

  • Hartley Wintney

  • Crossways Manor, Hook

  • Deer Park View, Odiham

  • Church Road, Fleet

  • Birchayes, Fleet

  • Gurkha Square, Fleet

  • Civic Office Central Courtyard, Fleet

  • Civic Office staff area, Fleet

  • Victoria Road, Fleet
