Air quality in Hart is already very good. Monitoring across the district shows that pollution levels are well below national air quality limits, including the newer and more ambitious targets set to better protect public health. Over recent years, levels of key pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) have remained consistently low and have continued to improve.
This strong performance provides reassurance that Hart is a healthy place to live and work. However, Hart District Council recognises that there is no safe level of air pollution, and that even small improvements can bring important health benefits. Reductions in air pollution have been found to have positive effects on the development of children’s lung function. (Dr, C. Whitty, 2022)
For this reason, the Council remains committed to protecting and improving air quality for all residents, particularly those most vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. We will continue to monitor air quality, ensure that new development supports clean air and work towards further reductions in pollution so that Hart’s high standards are not only maintained but improved for current and future generations.
