Corporate Peer Challenge

Corporate Peer Challenge is a valued improvement and assurance tool that is delivered by the public sector for the public sector.

Hart District Council is a ‘great place of work’ with ‘a positive, open and transparent organisational culture’ according to local government experts.

We welcomed a team of senior councillors and officers from other authorities in April 2025 to review our operations as part of the Corporate Peer Challenge.

Challenges form a key part of the improvement and assurance framework for local government. They are underpinned by the principles of sector-led improvement put in place by councils and the Local Government Association to support continuous improvement and assurance across the sector.

The LGA team undertook a comprehensive review of key finance, performance and governance information. They interviewed staff, councillors and partners to determine what’s going well and what we can improve. The feedback celebrated our strong track record of delivering core services with impressive examples of work that has improved outcomes for our residents.

Their report praised the way the Council has managed its finances, provided support to the local armed forces, developed the Here for Hart community network and our approach to climate change.

Improvements identified included focusing on the future vision for our district and what can be delivered ahead of local government reorganisation whilst maintaining services to residents.

We’re in the process of developing an action plan from the findings and the Peer Challenge team will revisit us in nine months to assess our progress. The action plan will be published here once it has been approved by our Cabinet.
