This year marks a major milestone for the Council - our 50th anniversary!

We share this moment with many other local authorities established in1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972 which reformed local government in England and Wales.

Hart District Council was created by combining two former districts – Hartley Wintney Rural District and Fleet Urban District. We took our new name from the River Hart that flows through the district.

In the last half a century we’ve had 44 Chairmen; our very first was Councillor Colquhorn and in May we will welcome our 45th. The Chairman acts as the official representative of the Council on civic and ceremonial occasions and as a figurehead in the Hart community.

Current Chairman Councillor Peter Wildsmith said: “It gives me great pleasure to be Chairman of Hart District Council at the start of our 50th year. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate our wonderful district and vibrant communities. We’re proud of what has been achieved together and will continue to work in partnership in the future.”

Throughout 2024, we are using a special gold anniversary logo to mark our 50 years serving the community.
