Hart District Council has launched a new downsizing scheme aimed at residents who no longer need a larger affordable home.
Smart Move is designed to help meet the demand for affordable homes for rent, which far outweighs the supply in the district. On average, families wait for several years for a suitably-sized home, with often much longer waits for those seeking 3 or 4+ bedroom homes.
To help families get the space they need, the Council is offering incentives and support for those living in an affordable home, who would like to downsize by at least one bedroom.
The scheme can offer the following support:
- A cash payment to help residents settle into a new home
- Help paying for removals costs
- Practical support to help residents move, provided through Citizens Advice Hart, including help with completing forms, changing address, updating utilities and providing guidance and support through the moving process
- Help from the Council to find and apply for properties advertised through the housing register which will meet needs and preferences.
Residents who are under-occupying and wish to move to a smaller property are also awarded additional priority on Hart’s housing register.
Councillor Peter Wildsmith, portfolio holder for housing and community services, said: “No resident is being made to move. Smart Move is designed to help both current and future residents find the right home.
“If you want to move closer to family or facilities, reduce running costs or the hassle of maintaining a larger property, or struggle to get around your home, Smart Move can help you find your next home. As long as you are downsizing, you can move to a property size of your choosing.”
Before starting the one-year pilot of Smart Move, the Council spoke to residents who are currently under-occupying to find out what support they would need to enable them to downsize.
