Historic building for sale following Council support

An important Grade II listed building in North Warnborough, The Swan Inn public house, is being listed for sale following considerable support from Hart District Council to protect and preserve it.

The Council stepped in several years ago and, after a four-year battle with an absentee landlord, the Secretary of State in 2020 finally allowed the Council to take this neglected and seriously fire-damaged building into public ownership.

Throughout the process the Council, at its own expense, has protected the building by securing the site, supporting the fire-damaged areas and covering its vulnerable roof.

Councillor Richard Quarterman, Portfolio Holder for Commercialisation and Corporate Services, said: “Our aim in taking the Swan Inn into public ownership was to protect this Grade II listed building, stabilise it and to stop it from falling into a state from which it could not be repaired. Our actions have achieved this, and we are now pleased to offer it for a buyer to bring back into long-term use.”

The Swan Inn is being offered for sale on a freehold basis on the open market. This will give the opportunity for a specialist purchaser to bring forward detailed and innovative proposals aimed at securing a long-term beneficial use for the former public house. The current planning use is for a public house but conversion into residential would be supported.
