Christmas across Hart

Councillors take part in Odiham Christmas celebrations

As the Christmas season settles over Hart, I’ve been reflecting on what this time of year means for our community. Christmas is sometimes described as a season of light, and that feels especially fitting for Hart, because the light here doesn’t come just from decorations or festive events. It comes from our great people.

Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of meeting residents, volunteers, service personnel, businesses, and community groups whose quiet acts of service keep Hart district so strong. Christmas is a moment to pause and recognise them. I know I’ve mentioned them before, but (frankly) we can’t thank them enough!

Across our towns and villages, I’ve seen countless examples of selfless neighbourliness: volunteers supporting the vulnerable, community groups organising warm hubs, and local charities working tirelessly to ensure no one feels forgotten. Their dedication embodies the very best of Hart. While Hart is the least deprived area of the UK, that’s not universal and we know that some people are struggling. It’s important that we leave no-one behind.

Our council teams also deserve recognition. Whether maintaining our parks, supporting families, keeping essential services running, or planning for the year ahead, their commitment often goes unseen but never unfelt.

Christmas can be an especially challenging time for those serving away from home and for families with loved ones deployed. We are a district with a proud military heritage; we hold our Armed Forces community close in our thoughts. I’m grateful to the various support organisations and veterans’ groups who help ensure that support is not just seasonal, but year‑round.

I think also of my charities. Service Dogs UK, with service personnel and their new assistance and support dogs having their first Christmas together. While Mustard Seed Autism has been providing all manner of help and support for families affected by the broad spectrum of autism.

This season also reminds us of the importance of connection.  Whether you celebrate Christmas, another festival, or simply enjoy the winter break, the coming weeks offer a chance to slow down, reconnect, and look after one another. Even the smallest gesture—a phone call, a shared cup of tea, a moment of kindness makes a meaningful difference. As we move into 2026, Hart District Council will continue working to strengthen our services, support our communities, and plan responsibly for the future, even as we know it will be a year of significant change in local government. There will be challenges, as there always are, but I remain optimistic because I see the resilience and generosity of the people who call Hart home. With all Councillors working pragmatically on your behalf to deliver the best outcomes.

Thank you to everyone who contributes to the life of this district—whether through public service, volunteering, community leadership, or simply being a good neighbour. You are the reason Hart remains such a special place.

I wish you and your families a peaceful Christmas and a hopeful, healthy New Year.

As ever, we’re committed to making Hart an even better place to live, work, and serve. If you’d like me to see what you’re doing please do let us know: chairman@hart.gov.uk

Warmest seasonal regards,
Chris Dorn
Chairman, Hart District Council

PS. I was delighted to attend the Odiham Extravaganza, which is run by the InOdiham team of volunteers. I took my turn in the 'Human Fruit Machine' (photograph at the beginning of this blog!), which raised money for local charities, while being extremely good fun! Many thanks to InOdiham for organising a fantastic event and for supplying the photo.
