It’s been a whirlwind start to my tenure as Chairman of Hart District Council, and I couldn’t be prouder of the energy, commitment, and community spirit I’ve witnessed across the district. From commemorating our Armed Forces, witnessing huge community involvement, to forging stronger ties with neighbouring councils, the past few weeks have been a powerful reminder of what public service is all about.
Honouring our Armed Forces
Some of the most meaningful moments this month were participating in the VE and VJ Day commemorations, and Odiham Parish Council conferring the ‘Freedom of the Parish’ on RAF Odiham. It was a privilege to stand alongside veterans, serving personnel and their families to recognise the sacrifices made in service of our country. The turnout was heartening, and the sense of unity palpable. Hart has long been a proud supporter of our military community, and this year’s events reaffirmed that commitment.
I was delighted to host the Community Dining-in Night of RAF Odiham in the ancient Cross Barn in the town, with the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire (the Kings’ representative) in attendance, as part of the RAF Odiham 100 years celebrations. King John’s Castle is nearby, where he stayed en route to signing the Magna Carta in 1215. It was sobering to recognise that the defence of democratic freedom has a high price for some and note that not all wounds are visible.
Keeping this in mind, we were delighted to host Service Dogs UK (one of my chosen charities) with Peanut the service dog at our Full Council meeting and hear Dave Harding explain the fantastic work they’re doing. Not only helping those with PTSD, but also using suitable rescue dogs they really are, as they say, “saving lives two at a time”.
Active communities
Our community is broad and diverse, so it was great to attend the opening of new paths at Grove Farm. This work was overseen by our own Hart Countryside team to enable all-weather, accessible paths into a delightful open space, right on the edge of Fleet.
While the Odiham Box Car event brought the whole community together for friendly competition and fun in the sunshine.
Military Covenant activities
Building on that spirit, I’ve been actively involved with the Here for Hart Team, strengthening Hart’s role in the Armed Forces Covenant. We’re working to ensure that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces and their families are treated with fairness and respect in our community. Whether it’s improving access to services, supporting employment opportunities or simply listening to their needs, Hart is determined to be a district that truly honours its covenant.
Visiting our neighbours
I’ve also had the pleasure of visiting neighbouring districts and attending civic events across Hampshire. These visits are more than ceremonial — they’re an opportunity to share ideas, celebrate local achievements and build collaborative relationships that benefit all our communities. As far as Eastleigh, Totton and the New Forest I’ve been inspired by the dedication of fellow councillors and the innovative work being done across the region.
Looking ahead
As I reflect on this busy time, I’m filled with optimism for what lies ahead. Hart is a district full of passionate people, vibrant communities, and a deep sense of civic pride. I look forward to continuing this journey with you all — championing local causes, celebrating our shared values, and making Hart an even better place to live, work, and serve.
