How to report if someone has died

Let us know so we can update their Council Tax account.

Use the Tell Us Once service

To report that someone has died, you can use the free national Tell Us Once service. This informs all government organisations in one go.

What happens after the death is reported?

If someone is still living in the property

Anyone living in the property aged over 18 will need to for pay the Council Tax from the date of death.

If only one person is living in the property, they can apply for a 25% discount.

If no-one is living in the property

If the property remains empty, it may be exempt from Council Tax until

  • six months after probate has been granted
  • someone else becomes responsible for the property

An extra discount may be applied if the property remains empty and is unfurnished.

If the property is rented

You will need to let us know when the tenancy ended. Email hart.counciltax@secure.capita.co.uk.

Council Tax account and bill

If there is a credit on the deceased person's Council Tax account, we will:

  • refund this to their estate or
  • transfer it to the new Council Tax account if they had a partner

If there is an outstanding balance on the deceased person's account, the amount will need to cleared by payment from the estate.
