When someone has died, you will have lots of things to do, at a time when you probably least feel like doing them. One of these is letting government departments know about the death.
You can use the Tell Us Once service to report a death to most government organisations in one go. This means you don't have to tell departments individually. This a free service. You don't have to use Tell Us Once but it can be very helpful.

Cemeteries and closed churchyards
We don't operate any open cemeteries or graveyards in Hart, but some of our parishes and town councils do.
Please contact your parish or town council for more information.
There are large cemeteries at Basingstoke and Aldershot with cremation facilities.
We look after four closed churchyards in the district. These are:
- Saint Peter’s, Yateley
- Saint Mary’s, Ewshot,
- Saint Mary’s, Eversley
- All Saints, Crondall
You won't be able to arrange a burial in one of these churchyards.
Our closed churchyards protocol gives more information about how we maintain them.
Public Health Act Funerals
In the absence of anyone available to take responsibility for the funeral, under Section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984, the Council will arrange the funeral.
These funerals are assessed for eligibility on a case by case basis. For more information, please contact our Environmental Health team on 01252 774421 or eh@hart.gov.uk.
You can also view the list of Section 46 Public Health Funerals arranged by Hart.
Exhuming human remains
The process of moving a person's remains from a grave is called an 'exhumation'.
You may need to exhume human remains to:
- move a body from the original grave site to a new grave
- deepen an existing grave for a further burial
- send them for cremation
You need a licence to remove human remains from the ground. You’ll need to get the signature of any close relatives, the owner of the grave plot and the burial authority.
An Environmental Health officer must be present at the exhumation. The exhumation can't go ahead if the conditions of the licence are not met, or there are public health or decency concerns.
