How will your petition be discussed at a meeting?

How will your petition be discussed at a meeting?

If a petition contains enough signatures, councillors will discuss the issue at the next appropriate committee meeting. Please note, this does not mean your petition will automatically be heard at the next scheduled meeting.

At the meeting, we will give the petition organiser three minutes to present the petition. Councillors will then discuss the petition for a maximum of 20 minutes.

The councillors will decide how to respond to the petition at this meeting. They may decide to:

  • take the action the petition requests
  • not to take the action requested for reasons put forward in the debate
  • commission further investigation into the matter, for example by another relevant committee

If our Cabinet has to make the final decision about the petition, councillors will decide whether to make recommendations to inform that decision.

The petition organiser will receive written confirmation of this decision and the result may be published on this website.
