Home with family and trees

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency, the Council has delivered its thermal imaging scheme for a second year, in partnership with Hart Voluntary Action.

Thermal imaging helps reveal issues that aren’t always obvious, such as poorly insulated walls, heat escaping around doors or windows, or draughts through small gaps. In many cases, the solutions are straightforward and low‑cost; from installing draught excluders and letterbox covers, to improving insulation in specific areas like loft hatches. As well as reducing the carbon footprint of a home, these small changes can help lower expensive energy bills and improve comfort for the household.

For one Yateley resident Sue, the scheme provided her with reassurance and advice on simple adaptions she could make.

“I’d noticed some cold spots in a number of areas of my home, so I was keen to book an appointment," said Sue. "The survey itself was interesting and the volunteers who carried it out were very knowledgeable, explaining what they were doing, as well as what issues the images were highlighting. Their enthusiasm rubbed off on me, but most importantly, I felt very comfortable inviting them into my home."

Sue explained that following the survey, she received a report with some suggestions: "The recommendations included installing blinds, adding a draught excluder to the base of the conservatory door and improving insulation to the side of the front door – all things that are realistic and achievable for me. I’ve already added the draft excluder and will consider the heating upgrade advice, once my boiler is at end-of-life."

"Since having the survey, I feel confident enough to make decisions that will improve my home’s energy efficiency and I’m a lot more aware about the effects of heat loss now too," said Sue, adding that she would recommend this scheme to others, particularly older homeowners “The survey and report can help you become more energy efficient. I’d say give it a go, what harm can it do?"
