Back in June 2021 Hart District Council broke ground at Edenbrook Country Park and began building Hart’s Green Garden.
Hart District Council, Hart Allotment Association and Hart Voluntary Action worked together to agree the final designs, a collaborative effort, guided by contractors Groundworks.
This partnership working has resulted in the creation of a multifunctional and inclusive community gardening space which hosts 94 individual plots for Hart residents and a generous shared gardening space called the Minding The Garden area. This is a place where everyone can come together around the shared interest of gardening.
Now construction is complete Hart Voluntary Action staff are busy settling in and creating a space to welcome the community in the new year.
The ‘Minding the Garden’ area will be home to Hart Voluntary Action who will be running therapeutic and horticultural sessions for community groups in this space.
This new facility includes raised beds, two large polytunnels, a composting toilet, large shelter, bike racks, disabled access benches and solid pathway throughout. During organised activities some areas may have restricted access but otherwise the individual plot holders will be welcome to use the shared space at their leisure too, to form connections across the site.
A large container sits between the individual plots and the Minding The Garden area. This will form shared storage and host the site notice board, shared tools and provide a place for plant swapping.
One of our first projects is to decorate or disguise the container and Hart Voluntary Action are currently looking for groups that might want to get involved with this task, you can find out more on their dedicated Facebook @mindingthegardenHVA and Twitter pages: @MindingGdn_HVA The contractors are set to complete the build by Christmas and we look forward to welcoming the individual plot holders next Spring.
The site will not officially open until early Spring 2022. We are currently organising welcome meetings for the designated plot holders in February. In the meantime, Hart Voluntary Action staff are busy settling in and creating a space to welcome the community in the new year.
