With Christmas fast approaching, Hart District Council is encouraging all households to recycle their glass bottles and jars over the festive period.
Last Christmas Hart residents recycled over 575 tonnes of glass, however more can be done to improve the recycling rate.
Cllr Alan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Contracts at Hart District Council, said: “Recycling glass helps the environment as the amount of energy required is considerably less than that needed to melt raw materials to create new bottles and jars; it also reduces CO2 emissions and waste disposal costs. Typically more glass is disposed of over the festive period and that’s why we’re encouraging all residents to recycle glass so it can be recycled over and over again.”
Recycling just one bottle can save enough energy to power a television for one and a half hours!
If you find you often have excess glass to recycle you can request an additional container, which is currently provided free of charge. Alternatively, if you would prefer a wheeled bin for your glass collection, the Council can supply a 140 litre bin for £30.00.
Please contact the Council on 01252 622122 to order an additional crate or place your bin order.
There will be changes to waste and recycling collections over the festive period, for more information and to view your revised collection date please visit www.hart.gov.uk/waste-recycling.
