Hart's Electric Vehicle Day celebrates new charging points

Hart District Council is inviting residents to view and test drive some of the latest and best electric vehicles to celebrate the new rapid charging points recently installed in Fleet town centre.

The Electric Vehicle Day will take place Saturday 25 March from 10.30am to 3.30pm in Church Road car park, Fleet.

Residents have the opportunity to look at and test drive the latest electric cars, including the Tesla Model X (with its 300 miles range on one charge), BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq and Nissan Leaf and a selection of electric bikes. The day will showcase Fleets new rapid charge points which allow drivers to charge while they shop and give a charge in around 30 minutes.

Cllr Mike Morris, Cabinet Member for Town and Village Regeneration at Hart District Council, said: "Our Electric Vehicle Day is a good opportunity for the Council to showcase the benefits of this new technology to residents. The new rapid charge points will not only encourage the use of electric vehicles in Hart, but also attract more electric vehicle users to visit Hart, bringing new customers and increasing footfall to the businesses of Fleet. This technological initiative will enhance the up and coming refurbishment and redesign of Church Road car park planned to commence this summer."

With Hart having been one of the fastest growing areas in terms of residents take-up of electric and hybrid vehicles, Electric Vehicle Day should continue to encourage more residents to consider electric vehicles and make the district more eco-friendly.

Cllr Steve Forster, Cabinet Member for Environmental and Technical Services said: "This event will allow residents to try the cars and see how great they are to drive - and learn of the huge amount of money they can save by going electric. The 'tax disc' savings and company car tax benefit can be significant as well as fuel costs of just 2p-5p per mile. That's under a quarter of a polluting diesel or petrol car.

“Electric Vehicles also benefit the environment and local economy, by improving local air quality, while the charging points bring new customers to Fleet."

The event is being held in partnership with Engenie, ABB, Barons BMW, Hyundai, Westway Nissan, Silvester Bros and Tesla. For more information about the event please visit www.hart.gov.uk.
