We can confirm that the garden waste collection service in Hart resumed on Monday 13 September, however a significant number of bins were missed due to the continued issues around staffing levels.
The garden waste collection service was running with only 25% of our driving capacity. Therefore, despite the service resuming, residents should be aware that delays in collections will occur, so please continue to leave your bin out if it has not been collected on your scheduled day.
There continues to be an unprecedented national shortage of HGV drivers, which is impacting many businesses and services across the country. This together with the risk of crews becoming infected with covid-19 has made our current staffing levels unpredictable.
Our contractor, Serco, is making every effort to recruit drivers so that they can be deployed to our waste collection service as soon as possible. It is offering a competitive salary and enhanced benefits package, including a range of bonuses and overtime. You can find out more and apply here.
Serco has redeployed many of its employees with an HGV licence, including the management team, into driving roles but has been unable to draw upon colleagues from other parts of its business due to the national driver shortage affecting all areas of its operations.
The service started last week (Monday 6 September) in Basingstoke and Deane in accordance with the scheduled fortnightly rota, however Basingstoke residents experienced delayed collections and whole rounds were missed. There are a similar number of garden waste customers across Basingstoke and Hart and the service is operating in the same way across both areas.
As you already know, we will be extending subscriptions to cover the missed collections but to ensure that this happens, residents should renew their subscriptions if they receive a reminder, as soon as the reminder comes through, and before the subscription lapses.
As the service resumes, to enable us to provide a fair service to all garden waste customers the crews will be unable to collect extra garden waste. If they take extra collections from some customers, this could impact their ability to complete rounds, which would be unfair on those missed as a result.
We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to our garden waste customers.
