Cllr David Neighbour, Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Direction and Partnerships at Hart District Council, said:
“We are aware of the recent spate of fly-tipping activity across the district in Greywell and Long Sutton.
We are working with our partners Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council to get the waste removed as soon as possible. The cost of the removal is still to be confirmed, but we estimate that the total load would equate to the size of a full lorry load.
We take a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping across the district and as such, we will investigate all incidents. A sample has been collected and the Environmental Health team will be working alongside the Environment Agency to establish who has dumped this waste.
If an organisation or individual can be proven guilty to this spate, then the potential penalty on conviction would be an unlimited fine and up to 5 years imprisonment. There are also powers under Section 5 of the Control of Pollution Act 1989 to seize a vehicle where the person is unable to show their authority to transport that waste.
We would encourage anyone who has any information about this case to contact us on 01252 774421 or to email firstname.lastname@example.org and quote: ‘Plastics fly-tip’.”
