Hart Employment and Skills Hub 

As a Council, supporting residents with employment and skills is one of our priorities. The Hub will enable residents to have the right skills, confidence and access to employment and personal development opportunities. The Hub can offer tailored support for residents that includes: 

  • Support to overcome barriers to securing employment 
  • Support to develop achievable job goals and explore career paths 
  • Help search for vacancies 
  • Job application advice 
  • Preparing for interviews including mock interviews 
  • Access to training and qualifications 
  • Confidence building

Help in finding and applying for work

National Careers Service 

The National Careers Service [3] offers personalised advice for anyone looking to choose or change their career. 

Links to Work 

Delivered by FEDCAP [4]  offering tailored employability support to help individuals on Universal Credit plan the journey back into work.  

GOV.UK 

You can use the ‘Find a job’ [5] online service to find and apply for jobs.  

Local Jobcentre Plus 

Visit the Jobcentre Plus Job Help [6] website for a range of support and to search latest vacancies. To visit an job centre office, the nearest locations are Aldershot and Farnborough, visit the Job Centre Guide website [7] for the full address details. Aged 18-24 and unemployed? Visit the North Hants Employment Skills Zone:

We understand looking for a job and considering your future career pathway can be daunting and it's sometimes difficult to know where to start. The North Hants Employment Skills Zone is for anyone aged 18-24 years living in Hart, Basingstoke and Deane and Rushmoor. It brings together lots of useful information and tools to support you with your journey, helping you to keep motivated and feeling more confident.

  • Local job vacancies including apprenticeships, Kickstart and traineeship opportunities
  • Business start-up advice and support
  • Upcoming events and workshops
  • Information on how to access financial and wellbeing support

  • A free and secure sign in area to access specialised careers toolkits, support to explore sectors and jobs that might suit your skills and experience. Plus online training and discussion forums, connecting you with others in a similar situation. 

You can also visit one of the in-person hub locations to speak to someone in person about employment, careers and training support. Hub locations include:

  • Alternate Mondays 2-4pm at Karuna Coffee, Aldershot, GU11 1DX
  • Alternate Thursdays 2-4pm at The Orchard, Basingstoke, RG21 4AF.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are an excellent way of getting qualifications and workplace experience.  As an employee, you can earn as you learn, and you get practical skills from the workplace. For apprenticeship vacancies and answers to your questions visit the National Apprenticeship Service [10] website.
Skills and Training

There are a host of skills and training opportunities available, including many free courses. For sector specific training courses, such as entry routes into construction and care, please email jobskills@hart.gov.uk [2] to find out what is available. Below is a sample of current training initiatives.

Local Colleges:

Both Farnborough College of Technology [11] and Basingstoke College of Technology [12] offer professional courses, including many free courses at the moment, to support individuals back into work or to change career route.

Community First: 

Community First's Learning and Development team provides high value training programmes that aim to provide you with the skills you need to enable you to develop your capabilities and improve your effectiveness. Visit the Community First [13] website for more information.

Online courses:

Hampshire Libraries have a range of courses including skills and employability courses. Visit the Hampshire Libraries [14] website for more information.

The Skills Toolkit [15] website is made up of free online courses, tools and resources to help you improve your digital and numeracy skills. The Department for Education has consulted some of the country’s leading educational experts and employers to make up a collection of high quality resources to suit a range of interests and skill levels.

Future Learn [16] allows you to learn 100% online with world-class universities and industry experts. Develop your career, learn a new skill, or pursue your hobbies with flexible online courses.

BT Skills for Tomorrow - BT have collaborated with leading digital skills organisations to collage courses and information on a range of subjects, from getting online for the first time, to honing your skills for work. For more information visit the BT Skills for Tomorrow [17] website.

Google Digital Garage - Discover a range of free learning content designed to help your business or help you in your career. To find out more visit the Google Digital Garage Courses [18] 

Help with starting your own business

Inspiring Enterprise [19] offers free business advice, mentoring, training courses and support to people who are unemployed and don't work and would like to start their own business. Volunteering

While you are looking for a job, there are other ways that you can get experience, for example volunteering. For more information about volunteering opportunities in the area, visit the Hart Voluntary Action website [21].

Health, wellbeing and looking for work

Job uncertainty and unemployment can take a toll on our confidence and wellbeing. Every Mind Matters [22] provides expert advice and practical tips to help you look after your mental health and wellbeing. You can find local support and national helplines [23] on our website. The national Mind website provides advice on coping with redundancy [24]. 

If you are living with a disability of health condition including mental health, find out about any additional support which may be available to you [25] or visit the Rethink Mental Illness website [26] for information. You could also speak to an Adviser in your local Jobcentre Plus.
