Covid-19 Housing

We are working hard to minimise disruption to our services as a result of the coronavirus situation. However, in some cases services may be disrupted due to staff absence or official advice from the government.

Contacting us

In line with Government guidelines, our officers are continuing to work remotely, therefore if you need advice and assistance, please call 01252 774239 or email housing@hart.gov.uk.

Our telephone line is open from 8.30am to 5.00pm and 4.30pm on a Friday. For genuine emergency homelessness outside of office hours, customers should telephone 01252 622122 when further information will be given about contacting our out-of-hours service supplier. Please note that this service may be under pressure in the current situation.

Rough sleeping and homelessness

Coronavirus (C0VID-19) affects everyone in our community, especially the most vulnerable. We will continue to work closely with partners to support people who are homeless or rough sleeping in our district.

If you see a person you believe may be rough sleeping you can report in two ways:

  • Contact the Engagement and Support team directly via emailing housing@hart.gov.uk or call 01252 774239
  • Report via Streetlink, the national rough sleeper reporting line (you can also download an app) or call 0300 500 0914

If the person needs urgent medical attention or you have a concern for welfare, please dial 999 for an ambulance or police.

We will continue to offer emergency assistance and advice to anyone rough sleeping in Hart. Homelessness assessments will generally be undertaken by telephone.

Lettings service

We have continued to keep this service running with minimal disruption so far and it is continually under review. Properties will be advertised where available, however due to some of our Housing Associations suspending lettings over the past few weeks, it may mean a delay to your potential moving dates. Please keep an eye on harthomes.org.uk or call 01252 774238 for further information.

Submitting documents

If you have been asked to provide any documents, these should be scanned or photographed and sent to housing@hart.gov.uk; if you are unable to do this, we may extend the time you have to provide documentation or, alternatively, they can be dropped off at the Civic Offices.

Paying your rent or mortgage

If you are having difficulties paying your rent, please contact your landlord in the first instance.

The government has announced measures to prevent loss of accommodation due to rent arrears if they have arisen because of the impact of the coronavirus situation.

If you are having difficulties paying your mortgage, please contact your mortgage lender. The government has advised that mortgage holidays can be taken during this period which will need to be agreed with your lender.

For further advice please contact us on 01252 774232 or housing@hart.gov.uk.

The government has issued the following guidance for landlords and tenants.

Social housing tenants

Social housing tenants experiencing hardship and difficulties in paying rent may find the following numbers useful

Important information

On 26 March 2020 the Government issued new guidance for landlords and tenants in England and Wales. It confirmed that from 27 March 2020 the court service will suspend all ongoing housing possession action – this means that neither cases currently in the system or any about to go in the system can progress to the stage where someone could be evicted.

This current  suspension of housing possessions action is due to end at the end of August so if you have been served notice or are concerned please contact us ASAP. This measure will protect all private and social renters, as well as those with mortgages and those with licences covered by the Protection from Eviction Act 1977.

For further advice please contact our housing advice team on 01252 774239 or email housing@hart.gov.uk. You can read the full legislation here

Call for spare accommodation

To help key workers and the homeless during the COVID-19 outbreak, the Hart District Council Housing team is calling for any guest houses, bed and breakfasts or hotels near the district to notify us of any vacancies they can offer.

If you would like to help, please contact our Tenancy Sustainment Officer by emailing claire.boxall@hart.gov.uk or calling 07824 406789.
