About Parish & Town Council Elections
The Returning Officer appointed by the District Council is responsible for the conduct of and arrangements for Parish and Town Council elections. However, the Parish or Town Council and the Parish or Town Clerk have important roles to play, especially in giving advice to prospective candidates.
Parish and Town Councillors hold office for a period of 4 years and retire on the fourth day (the Monday) following the day of the election. The newly appointed councillors take office on the day in which their predecessors retire.
Mid-term vacancies for Parish and Town Councils are filled by holding a bye-election provided 10 electors within the electoral area request an election be held in writing to the Proper Officer. Otherwise the Parish or Town Council can co-opt a person to fill the vacancy.
