Free Parking for Fleet Carnival
HART District Council has agreed to allow free parking in Fleet’s town centre car parks on the day of Fleet Carnival – Saturday July 11.
This year the famous Carnival is being concentrated into the Saturday and Hart believes that the free parking gesture will help to swell the large crowds expected in the town that day.
However, motorists should note that Fleet Road parking bays will be out of use because of the processions and Hart’s enforcement staff will be ensuring that local roads are kept clear to provide access for emergency vehicles.
This year’s Fleet Carnival Association Chairman, Mr Campbell McArthur, commented: “I am overjoyed that the council has agreed to do this. It makes it better for everyone –the visitors won’t have to pay and the businesses supporting the events will also benefit.”
Kevin Whibley, marketing and community market manager for the Carnival, who has organised the Fleet Christmas festivities for the past three years, said free parking had helped to make the event bigger.
“Whilst many people continue to walk into town those coming from further afield are able to find a place to park at no expense. I just hope they put the money they would have spent into one of the collecting tins on the day.”
Cllr Stephen Parker, Hart’s Deputy Leader, echoed the plea for visitors to put the saved parking fees into the collection boxes.
He added: “ Carnival is all about the Fleet community coming together and helping its vulnerable members while having some fun. I am delighted that Hart has the opportunity to help Carnival to be the success it deserves to be.”
