New waste scheme boosts glass recycling
Date: 16 January 2007
The introduction of Hart’s new glass recycling service has resulted in a massive increase in the amount of bottles and jars collected.
New figures show that in December 250 tonnes of glass bottles and jars were collected from the district’s homes and a further 120 tonnes was collected from the District’s 36 bottle banks.
Kerbside glass collection is part of Hart’s Alternate Bin Collection waste and recycling collection service.
Average monthly collections from bottle banks before the Council’s new Alternate Bin Collection started, were 170 tonnes.
Commenting on the runaway success of glass recycling in Hart, Council cabinet member for waste and recycling, Cllr Denis Gotel said:
“This really is the most fantastic news. I’d like to thank all those people who are putting their jars and bottles out for the service to collect. In December 250 tonnes of glass were collected by the Council’s new kerbside glass collection service. In addition, the public still put 120 tonnes of bottles and jars in to the district’s bottle banks – that’s 370 tonnes of glass that went for recycling instead of going to waste.”
