REMEMBER, REMEMBER YOUR PETS ON 5TH NOVEMBER
TRADITIONALLY the fifth of November was ‘bonfire night’. Nowadays however fireworks feature in a variety of celebrations right up to the New Year and whilst many people enjoy the sights and sounds of firework parties, lots of animals are frightened by them.
You should expect sudden loud noises from fireworks at all times during the day and evenings from October onwards so you should ensure that your pets are not able to escape from your property. You may want to consider leaving your dog’s or cat’s collar and tags on in case they do get out of your house and are found as strays.
If you know that your pet becomes very distressed by loud noises, you should seek advice from your vet who will be able to advise you accordingly.
If you are going to hold a firework party you should be aware that there may be animals kept outside near to you such as ponies and cows in paddocks and fields.
Before lighting your bonfire it is advisable that you check for any hedgehogs that may be hiding inside.
Hart District Council Dog Warden Lisa Clements says: “It can be a frightening time for dogs and other animals and it is important to ensure that they are not left alone or able to escape from your property”.
