Ashwells Copse
Ashwells Copse is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC). It is situated in a residential area of Hook, close to the A30. Comprising of 0.6 hectares of ancient semi-natural woodland, it is a valuable wooded habitat and a peaceful place to visit. Large oak trees dominate, with an under storey of mainly Hazel and some Holly and Field Maple. In spring the ground flora is dominated by Wood Anemones and Blue Bell’s. The best time to see these woodland flowers is in April and early May when the woodland is awash with colour.
Hart Countryside Service will be carrying out several restoration projects in 2010 to improve the site for wildlife and for people. Conservation work will include coppicing of Hazel and preserving the health of the many large oak trees. Other projects will include the removal of large amounts of garden waste and rubbish, opening up the existing footpath and installing several footbridges to improve public access. An interpretation board will also be installed to provide information on the site and will include information on woodland management and wildlife.
- Access to the site can be found at the end of Four Acre Coppice or from several entrances on Griffin Way South.
- There is a small informal path which runs through the woodland. Due to the location of the site there no immediate parking facilities.
- The site is dog friendly.
- Ashwells Copse is 10-15 minutes walk from Hook Station and is a minutes walk from the number 10 Bus stop on Griffin Way
