Hart District Council is committed to reducing the amount of waste that is collected. Within the Hart District area, over 30,000 tonnes of rubbish is disposed of per annum which is the equivalent to 1 tonne per household a year. Most of the rubbish that we produce is incinerated at one of the three incinerators in Hampshire. All three incinerators are state of the art.
Much of this rubbish that is thrown away can in fact be recycled or composted.
The diagram illustrates the amount and types of waste that is disposed of in a typical Hampshire bin.

As it can be seen, most of this material can be recycled/composted.
Minimising Waste
The most obvious way to reduce the amount of waste that is thrown away is to not create it in the first place. Furthermore, buying products, which have been recycled, is another way of helping the environment and also reduce the amount going to landfill. Have a look at the handy hints below for some ideas:
Avoid over packaging. Do you need to buy items individually wrapped? If so, is the wrapping material made from recycled materials? Could you buy the same product from recycled materials?
Look out for items such as recycled toilet paper, kitchen rolls, tissues, refuse sacks, recycled writing paper and envelopes
Recycle your rags rather than buying new cloths or paper products, even if they are recycled
Use proper cups, plates, and cutlery rather than plastic or disposable items.
Choose longer life, energy-efficient and rechargeable products
Buy refillable or remanufactured printer cartridges for home or workplace computers and return spent cartridges for recycling
Keep asking questions at your local store about the availability of recycled products. Congratulate the store manager when new recycled content product ranges are stocked
Use your consumer power in the work place to. For example, nearly every office has a photocopier; does it use recycled paper? Has it ever been tried?
Make sure you print double sided to avoid wasting paper. Re-use scraps of paper for note taking.
Help spread the word – tell other people that you buy recycled products in preference to others
Recycling in the UK has become a major issue and Hart as part of the Hampshire Recycling campaign is striving to become a more sustainable and cleaner area. Elvetham Heath is a prime example of the way forward, the developers have been asked to provide 3 underground bottle banks and 2 have been installed to date. These were the first in the country and help to reduce visual and noise impacts associated with the deposition of bottles. In addition there is the communal recycling facility located near the local supermarket which has facilities for paper, cardboard, glass and textiles.
Each household can also purchase a blue recycling bin where you can also recycle paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles, which will be collected at kerbside by Hart District Council.
What can you do to help?
There are three simple steps we can all take to prevent waste being thrown away.
Recycle – Recycling means processing waste to produce a raw material or new products. This enables the same material to be used more than once.
Reduce – It is best to minimise waste at source. Think about disposal before you make a purchase
Reuse – Using products again gives them a second life, postponing disposal and dispensing with the need to buy new products for the same task.
